Mattias Thedens stands as one of Norway's emerging talents on the Hardanger Fiddle, Norway’s national instrument. Raised in a musical family, Mattias immersed himself in the world of folk festivals from a young age.
Mattias picked up Norway's national instrument, the "Hardingfele," delving into tunes from the valleys of Tovdal and Setesdal in southern Norway. He continued to study various Hardanger fiddle styles and traditions from around Norway, with Telemark as his main focus.
He successfully completed his Bachelor of Arts in Hardanger Fiddle performance at the esteemed Norwegian Academy of Music, benefiting from the guidance of distinguished mentors such as Knut Buen and Håkon Høgemo.
In 2023 he won the National competition, Landskappleiken, in Hardanger fiddle class B, and was promoted to the elite A class, where he currently is one of the youngest competitors. Mattias was also portrayed in the national television documentary "Trollstemt" (Troll-tuned), about his work with both tradition and innovation.
In 2020, Mattias founded the folk-rock band Gangar, which has since toured in 14 countries. Their debut album, "Stubb," was released in 2023 under the prestigious Norwegian record label Heilo, and was well received in Norway, and around the world.
Mattias is dedicated to keeping the Hardanger fiddle tradition alive, exploring different regional styles and techniques, making sure the music stays true to its roots while also expressing his personality and history through his playing.
Whether playing solo, competing, or performing with Gangar, he’s passionate about sharing this rich tradition and keeping it moving forward.
